Seen above are volcanic rock formations on top of Obsidian Dome, California. This is one of several volcanic domes in the Long Valley Caldera area, between June Lake and Mammoth Lakes. The eruption that formed it has been dated to 1350. The dome is about a mile (1.6 km) in diameter and rises some 400 ft (122 m) above the surrounding terrain. Bulldozed roads on the top and an access road on the west side are relics of an abandoned mining operation. Photo taken October 25, 2014.
