This montage shows the unusual seascape (top and right) of the Santa Margherita seashore along Monte Cofano Gulf, in northwestern Sicily, Italy. Dissolution by surface water (fresh water) of Plio-Pleistocene carbonate deposits give the limestone rock here its peculiar shapes and colors. Fossils including pecten (bottom left) are readily found along the Santa Margherita shore. Photo taken on September 2, 2015.
