On one of the first mornings we had frost here in Mouscron, Belgium, I noticed this intriguing pattern on the stonework of my patio. Moist air condensed on the flat stones where it then froze when the temperature dropped below the freezing level — overnight the temperature fell to about 25 F (-4 C). Condensation occurs first on colder surfaces, such as metal, glass or rock. Minor imperfections in the patio stones, in this case, the flowerlike motif, were brought out by the thin coating of frost.
