Shown above is a stunning aurora over Kvaløya Island, Tromsø, as viewed on March 10, 2016. A few days before this picture was taken a Coronal Mass Ejection on the Sun discharged countless energized particles (mainly protons and electrons) triggering a geomagnetic storm on the Earth as they collided with the particles that make up the Earth's magnetosphere and radiation belts. The greenish color results when the excited particles smash into atoms and molecules of oxygen.
