The photos above show a green flash sequence as observed from Gioiosa Marea, Sicily, on the Tyrrhenian Sea. I was very happy to witness this aquamarine-colored flash while celebrating my birthday. In essence, green flashes result when atmospheric dispersion produces separate images of each spectral color in such a way that the upper rim of the Sun (upon rising or setting) very briefly flashes green and then blue. Always be careful when looking toward the Sun -- even the setting or rising Sun. Photos taken May 19, 2013.
