The photo above shows sea stacks on Ruby Beach, Olympic National Park, Washington, as observed at low tide, during a foggy sunrise on May 25, 2015. Stacks such as this indicate the location of former headlands. Since the sandstone they're composed of is resistant to erosion, compared to the rock that once connected them to the mainland (at right), they stand well above the waves even at high tide. A tidal pool is in the foreground.
