These attention-getting lightning bolts appear to be targeting the high rises buildings of Brasília, Brazil but are actually some distance from the city. The partially reddened illuminated clouds are seen through a dome of pollution overhanging this city of 4 million inhabitants. Thunderstorms are quite common in inland areas of central and southeastern Brazil during the spring and summer seasons (from November through February), where they typically occur about one in every 3 days.
