In California, a sure sign of spring is the blooming of the California poppies. These yellow-orange beauties were captured in a field near San Luis Obispo, California, on March 24, 2017. The California poppy is the State of California's official flower -- April 6 is recognized as California Poppy Day. Though its scientific name is Eschscholzia californica, it grows, as a native plant, throughout much of the western U.S., including Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, Washington and New Mexico. It's typically grown as an ornamental flower, but was used as a food source and cosmetically by Native Americans living west of the Rocky Mountains.
