On the evening of July 26, 2002, a thunderstorm was developing rapidly along Interstate 10 in southern New Mexico. Using a G-1 digital camera, we captured the photo above. The outflow from the storm created a huge dust storm that eventually shut down all traffic on this highway. Just before the gust front got to our location, dust devils could be seen forming all around the desert in front of the coming storm. The trio above danced around each other as they pumped massive amounts of sand up into the clouds. It's unusual to observe multiple dust devils in such close proximity to each other.
