Divided Sky

The photo above showing an oddly divided sky was taken just before sunset near Edinboro, Pennsylvania -- the camera is facing west. An approaching front, very dark clouds at lower right, would bring rain later in the evening. Behind this cloud deck, not seen in the photo, a cloud top is partially blocking the setting Sun. This resulted in the wedge-shaped shadow (crepuscular ray) at top right and top center. However, where the Sun is still shining, center and left, the partially cloud-covered sky is much brighter.
