Shown above is a phenomenal red rainbow observed at sunrise from Súľov, Slovakia. The camera is facing west. It’s unusual to see such a bright red bow. Red rainbows appear red for the same reason that a sunset or sunrise looks red -- when the Sun is low in the sky, in this case just below the horizon, the shorter wavelengths (violets, blue and green colors) are more readily scattered from our view than are the longer wavelengths (oranges and reds). Note also the faint reddish spokes converging at the antisolar point. Photo taken on September 14, 2017.
