The Hayman Fire of June 2002 was the largest in Colorado history. This picture looks southeast from Forest Service Road 211 (the Matukat Road) in the Pike National Forest, over the Hackett Gulch area of the South Platte River valley. It shows a large portion of the devastation suffered from this senseless fire, which resulted from arson, in a forest that had not been thinned in 120 years, according to the U.S. Forest Service. Approximately 137,760 acres were burned and 133 residences destroyed at a cost estimated at $237.8 million. The cost to the ecosystem is incalculable at this time. [Revised November 2017]
