This panoramic view into the Soda Springs Basin, in southeastern Utah, was taken from the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands Nation Park. Island in the Sky, an appropriately named mesa, towers some 1,000 ft (305 m) above the surrounding terrain. In my opinion, this serene spot is unmatched for its sweeping vistas of Canyonlands. However, it's a bit of a hike to get up there, and it requires some rock scrambling too. The Soda Springs Canyon (in the foreground at left), cutting into the broad basin, was formed over tens of millions of years by the fast-flowing Green River (mid-ground at left), a tributary of the Colorado River.
