Shown above at center is El Cono de Arita, in the Andes mountains of Argentina, an eye-catching geologic formation. It stands 400 ft (122 m) above a surrounding salt pan (salar). El Condo de Arita's nearly perfect triangular shape is evidently a small, partially formed volcanic cone. Evaporation over the eons created the salar on which El Cono de Arita lies, the 6th biggest in the world. Because it's encircled by a bed of light-colored salt, it can appear to be floating.
