Shown above is the Argentine research base of Marambio, on the Antarctic Peninsula in Antarctica. After weeks of the Sun being continuously above the horizon, we finally observed our first sunset of the New Year here in early February. This beautiful sunset occurred at approximately 23:54 hours (just before midnight). It should be noted that at the time of the equinoxes, the poles and the equator, as well as everywhere else on Earth, receive nearly equal amounts of daylight and darkness. At left, the third quarter Moon can be seen over the Weddell Sea. Photo taken on February 7, 2018.
