On this photo my fiancé and I are climbing in the Dolomites in northern Italy. Here we're descending a via ferrata route around Monte Paterno -- the camera is facing southwest. I would estimate our elevation was about 8,000 feet (2,440 m). Tre Cime di Lavaredo is seen in the background. The tallest of the three peaks, in the middle, stands 9,836 ft (2,998 m) and was first scaled in 1869. Note the alluvial fan at mid-ground at the bottom left.

During World War I the front line between Austria and Italy ran through the area of the Tre Cime. Today numerous fortifications can still be found, such as the tunnel at left. We were fortunate to have had near perfect weather during our visit. The Dolomites are incredible! Photo taken in late August 2017.
