Shown above in the foreground is the Pui de Lleràs (center and right) and in the mid-ground the Sant Gervàs (left rear), two of the ranges of the Catalan Pre-Pyrenees mountains, a complex system of foothills of the Pyrenees mountains (snowcapped in the background). These ranges represent a geographical transition between the Montsec mountains and the Axial Pyrenees (main system of Pyrenees mountains).

Mesozoic limestones with interlayings of cemented clays dominate the Sant Gervàs range; whereas conglomerates are more common in the Pui de Lleràs range. Destruction of the primitive vegetation cover (mostly tree and brush removal) on the southern slopes of Pui de Lleràs has been very intense in recent decades, so erosion has been accelerating.
