The Passo dello Stelvio (Stelvio Pass) in northern Italy is the highest paved alpine pass in Italy, with a crest height of 9,045 ft (2,757 m). Its four dozen hairpin turns are situated within the schists and phyllites of the Alpine basement complex. The dolomitic peaks here reach nearly 13,000 ft (3,962 m).

On either the last Saturday in August or the first Saturday in September the Stelvio Bike Day is held -- the mountain pass is closed to all motorized traffic. Approximately 12,000 cyclists participate in this annual event. Photo taken on July 22, 2017.
