Shown above is a smoky scene over the Snowy Mountain of British Columbia, Canada, as observed on August 5, 2018. A number of wildfires can be seen on the flanks of the mountain. The low hanging Sun takes on pinkish hues here as a result of smoke particles, which are somewhat larger than the wavelengths of visible light, scattering out much of the shorter wavelength colors (blues and greens). The longer wavelength colors (yellows, oranges and reds) are scattered more weakly. At its peak, the Snowy Mountain Wildfire covered approximately 30,000 acres (more than 12,000 hectares).
