The grim looking sky shown above was observed over the acropolis of Philippi in Krinides, Greece, on July 23, 2018. These drooping mammatus clouds loom over the ancient acropolis. They form as a result of downdrafts in convective storms and seem to be most often reported following the passage of strong thunderstorms. Note that the Archeological Site of Philippi was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2016.
