The above photo, taken in early November 1998, shows a beautiful crimson aurora over Baker Lake (foreground) in northwest Washington State. If you look carefully you may be able to see a steam plume emanating from Sherman crater on moonlit Mt. Baker (10,778 feet). Though this volcanic mountain hasn't erupted for more than 100 years, some thermal activity occurs occasionally.
