The above photo shows the Boeing Delta II rocket launching the Mars Odyssey spacecraft into a clear blue sky. Liftoff occurred at 11:02 a.m. EDT on Saturday, April 7. It'll take approximately 7-months to reach Mars. The Mars Odyssey mission is designed to map the Martian surface, with a special emphasis to look for geological features that may indicate the presence of near-surface water, now or in the past. The Mars Odyssey spacecraft was built by Lockheed Martin Space Systems for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory
