Kamchatka Volcano

On May 19, 2001, Sheveluch, a large stratovolcano in North-Central Kamchatka, Russia, erupted and sent an ash cloud skyward to 33,000 ft. On May 22, the volcano erupted again producing a mushroom ash column to a height of about 65,000 ft. A heat signature (red) and ash (light blue haze) from the eruption are visible from the NOAA 14 polar orbiter. Also, heat signatures and smoke (indicated by the white arrow) are visible from fires burning in Russia.
