Oneida Lake Ice

The above photo was taken on April 13, 2003 and shows ice piled high on the shore of Lake Oneida in central New York, about 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Syracuse. Wind and currents have forced the ice against the shore of the lake. The rock riprap, which was meant to act as a break or buffer against ice and waves, has been breached by the ice floes. Note the damage to the sidewalk. The sign in the foreground says "No Swimming." This ice break-up announces the onset of spring, after a particularly harsh winter in central New York. However, it appears spring has been a bit delayed this year -- it has snowed in central New York the past several days.
