One Hundred Thousand Feet Up
July 06, 2003
Summary authors & editors: Mark Conner
This image was taken in November of 2002 from an altitude of 100,072 feet (30,502 m) over south-central Iowa, looking towards the east-southeast. At this altitude, well above the clouds, the curvature of the Earth can clearly be seen, as well as the blackness of space and the thin blue veil of our atmosphere. The Canon Elph LT camera that snapped this photo was part of a balloon-borne amateur radio payload, which was tracked with GPS-based equipment and recovered after the flight.
