Lunar Halo and Mars

The above photo was taken near Melbourne, Australia on the evening on September 8, 2003 (UTC 12:30), one day before the Full Moon. A thin veil of cirrocumulus clouds produced a faint 22-degree halo around the Moon. In this case, the ice crystals composing these clouds were more or less randomly oriented. Mars is to the lower right of the Moon -- about 1/2 way between the Moon and the halo.
