The photo above was taken this past January from Novo Hamburgo, Brazil (in the state of Rio Grande do Sul -- the southern-most state of Brazil) and shows a daunting shaft of heavy rain, pouring down on the city. Although the scene appears very dark, it was just past 4:00 p.m., with still plenty of daylight remaining. January is mid-summer in the Southern Hemisphere, and tropical deluges are not uncommon this time of the year in Brazil. Though the sky looks ominous, no severe weather was reported.
