This photo was taken during a flight from Cincinnati, Ohio to Atlanta, Georgia on June 11, 2004, at roughly 8:30 p.m. (Eastern Daylight Time). Our altitude was approximately 28,000 ft (8,534 m). Note the three rather distinct crepuscular rays emanating from the golden horizon. These twilight rays result from clouds, perhaps cumulonimbus towers, just beyond the distant horizon -- the darkened rays are areas where sunlight is blocked by the presence of clouds.
