This striking photo of a distant thunderstorm was captured near sunset on August 17, 2004 from Borrego Springs, California. The camera is facing to the southeast, and the looming thunderhead is therefore illuminated by the setting Sun. Note the anvil formation and the spreading cirrus clouds -- a sign of a mature thunderstorm.
The photo is a panoramic image that spans 126 degrees along the horizon -- six images with a 14 mm lens, in portrait mode, were required to capture this storm.
