The photo above showing the Olympic Mountain Range silhouetted against a magenta sky was taken on September 6, 2004 from near Seattle, Washington. This beautiful sunset illustrates how much color the Sun's rays can produce with the right conditions -- in this case, against an altocumulus cloud backdrop. As an added bonus, a Sun pillar is visible (lower center) just above the jagged peaks of the Olympic Range, which rise as high as 8,000 ft (2,438 m) above nearby Puget Sound (to the east) and the Pacific Ocean (to the west).
