The view above of picturesque Mono Lake in California was taken on January 29, 2004. I snapped this photo from the Navy Beach area at the south end of the lake. It was just another wonderful day in the eastern Sierra -- cold and about 36 degrees F (3 C), with barely a breeze to ripple the water. Mono Lake lies at an elevation of 6,379 ft (1,945 m). It has no outlet (terminal lake), being fed primarily by glacier runoff -- the only way for water to leave is by evaporation.
