The photo above shows a resplendent sunset and its enchanting reflection on the Arno River, which flows through the ancient city of Pisa, Italy. It was taken on January 19, 2005. The greater path-length of sunlight when the Sun is very near the horizon accounts for the crimson and gold colored (longer wavelengths) sky. Left of "Solferino" Bridge (middle of the picture) is the dark shape of the "La Spina" Church, built in 1230 A.D. Note also the faint Sun pillar.
