This picture showing a portion of the American Falls in New York was taken on "The Maid of the Mist" tour boat from the Niagara River in August of 2004. These falls consists of a layer of Silurian dolostone over layers of limestone, shale and sandstone. Erosion of the escarpment has created the talus shield (rocks at the base of the Falls). Plunging water, resulting in a nearly constant mist, produced this rainbow -- an indication that the Sun was at the photographers back.
