The photo above shows the distinct red sandstone rocks of Red Rock Canyon, Nevada. It was taken on March 23, 2005 just only 17 miles (29 km) west of Las Vegas -- an easy (non taxing) drive from the Vegas Strip and a worthwhile side trip. Depositions from an ancient ocean resulted in alternating tan, grey and red sandstone layering. The red sandstone is part of the geologic Navajo Formation, the same formation found in Zion National Park, Utah. Snow-covered Mount Charleston (7,717 feet or 2,352 m) can be seen in the background.
