On a recent trip to do a bit of bird watching at Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge near Seattle, Washington, we were rewarded with an amazing variety of plant and animal life peculiar to the salt water and fresh water wetlands of southern Puget Sound. The stunning colors of several ponds, as shown above in these two un-enhanced photos, was totally unexpected. Both ponds are covered with floating plants; the green pond is duckweed (Lemna minor), and the red pond is Mosquito Fern (Azolla filiculoides).
