The photo above was taken during a dust storm in early April from Vega de San Mateo (Gran Canaria, Canary Islands). The diminished visibility of this dusky morning on Gran Canaria Island resulted from airborne sand and dust particles, which have been carried by strong easterly winds from the Sahara Desert. Because of the attenuation of sunlight by these myriad aerosols, there's very little color contrast or detail in this scene. Note that the Sun is pallid in appearance and could be photographed without the use of a special filter.
