The above panorama of the Grand Canyon in Arizona was captured on May 10, 2005, using 7 separate photographs. It was taken from the observation deck at the Bright Angel Lodge and is looking up Bright Angle Canyon -- left of center. Though the Grand Canyon itself has been carved relatively recently (during the past 5-6 million years), the sequence of sedimentary rocks exposed in the walls of the canyon provide an amazing record of the Paleozoic Era (550-250 million years before present). The differing coloration of the layering is an indication of the conditions that existed at the time of deposition. Notice the Colorado Plateau in the background.
