The above photo consists of two images, which were snapped from my window in Aachen, Germany and digitally composed into one single image. The left image showing a snowy winter scene was taken on January 29, 2004, and the right image showing a warm, early summer's day was taken on July 1, 2004. In the mid latitudes, the period between when snow covers the ground and trees are bare and when the same trees are fully leafed out can be a matter of weeks. This period is generally shorter the further poleward one travels.
