The photo above shows Avalanche Lake, New York, located in the col between Mount Colden (4,714 ft or 1,436 m), the shear face to the right of center, and Avalanche Mountain (3,800 ft or 1,154 m), on the left shore of the lake. Those who trek along the shores of Avalanche Lake know that Lake's name is indeed appropriate. Hikers must negotiate piles of debris left by the many avalanches that have occurred between both mountains. However, the Adirondack Mountain Club has provided a well maintained series of ladders, boardwalks, and bridges to assist hikers through the area.
