This photo was taken in the lava fields near the town of Kalapana, Hawaii (on the big Island of Hawaii). It shows a pattern of lava ropes, which I call "Pele's Fingerprints" for its distinctive shape. Pele is a legendary Hawaiian goddess who blows her stack whenever she loses her temper. Kalapana, once a fishing village, was almost totally destroyed by lava from the eruption of Kilauea in 1990.
