The above photo was taken at 34,000 ft (10,363 m), somewhere above North Carolina, while on a commercial flight heading from Norfolk, Virginia to Dallas, Texas, on January 6, 2006. When I left Norfolk, the temperature was 34 degrees (1 degrees C), and it was raining, but in Dallas it was 80 degrees (27 C) and sunny. The nimbostratus cloud deck responsible for the chilly, wet weather in Virginia is pictured above and was associated with a low pressure system off the Carolina coast -- the clouds were perhaps 20,000 ft (6,096 m) below the altitude of the aircraft. Looking out my window, the scene reminded me of ski tracks in snow.
