The photo above shows tongues of lava sniffing the Pacific Ocean off the Big Island of Hawaii. My husband and I decided to hike the lava fields resulting from an eruption of Kilauea (early in 2005) on this sunny April day in 2005. We walked over sharp black lava rocks, and as far as the eye could see there was only black lava. As we were walked through an area having a heavy odor of sulphur, my husband suddenly told me that his feet were very hot. I looked down and saw the red lava in the tube just beyond my feet. A few steps farther we saw a fiery lava tongue that seemed to dart out from nowhere. We followed it to the ocean's edge where we were able to witness it meeting the sea in a protest of hissing and sizzling noises.
