On the above photo, I'm approaching the icy summit of Mt. Washington, the highest peak in New England at 6,288 ft (1,917 m). My friend Steve took the picture on November 14, 2005. Mt. Washington is known for horrendous weather which has been well documented by the weather observatory, located atop the mountain. Winds clocked as high as 231 mph (383 km per hour) have buffeted the summit (a one time world record). Nonetheless, it's a popular hike both in winter and summer, and there's even a bike race up the auto road in August. Note the rime coated meteorological towers in the background.
