The photo above shows an impressive sand dune in Indiana Dunes State Park -- taken on April 30, 2006. This Park includes moving dunes along Lake Michigan as well as dunes camouflaged with oaks and more permanent vegetation. Though dunes aren't usually associated with the Mid-West area of the U.S., accumulations of sand can be found on the lee side (opposite from direction wind is blowing) of the Great Lakes. Indiana Dunes State Park is located inside the Indiana National Lakeshore. Together, these parks include a wide variety of ecosystems from lakeshore, to oak savannahs, to prairie, to marshes and bogs.
