The photo above shows researchers from the Universidad de Salamanca sampling gravimetric soil moisture in a wheat field near Salamanca, Spain on June 7, 2006. Soil moisture sampling is being conducted in the region north of Salamanca as part of the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite program. These measurements are made biweekly in order to calibrate and validate both airborne and space-borne estimates of surface soil moisture.
