This informative photo illustrates the geometry of the partial lunar eclipse of September 7. The woman holding the hoop was at just the right distance from the photographer (about 30 m) to show the umbra portion of this eclipse -- the penumbra portion was added using photoshop. In western France, where this picture was captured, the maximum eclipse occurred just before sunset.
