Port Orford, located on the southern Oregon coast, is Oregon's only open water port. The huge promontory of Battle Rock dominates the view from the shoreline (shown in the background on the photo above). This was the site of a battle between the first landing party of white settlers and local Native Americans. Port Orford affords spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean (including passing whales) -- this city has a long history as both a fishing and lumber port. Oregon wildflowers (and planted ones too) plus a stoic coastal pine nicely spruce up the foreground of this summer scene. Photo taken in early August of 2006.
