This pumpkin colored rising Moon was photographed from near Munich, Germany on September 7, 2006. The ghoulish color shown here is partially a result of a partial lunar eclipse. However, like the color of the Sun at sunset or sunrise, the rising and setting full Moon is reddened by the greater path length through the atmosphere of light that arrives from the horizon than from overhead. There won't be a full Moon on tonight's Hallowed Eve -- it's a waxing, gibbous Moon. Still, the Moon should be of sufficient size to perhaps see a witch's silhouette.
