The above photo shows alpine glow or alpenglow on the Bridger Mountains of south central Montana. Alpenglow occurs when the low Sun, which has already set at lower elevations, illuminates protruding hill sides and mountain tops in shades that range from pink to purple. On this winter's day, the coating of snow and crystal clear viewing conditions seemed to enhanced the afterglow effect. Photo taken in January 2004.
