The photo above shows subtle but nonetheless significant damage resulting from an ice storm that hit Bloomington, Illinois in December of 2006. This early winter storm churned through central Illinois and coated the north side of my two-story brick home with a half-inch of ice. The ice subsequently sublimated, leaving the still snow-covered ground covered with evidence of a freeze-thaw cycle's erosive power. Some of my mortar had been converted to sand!
